Aluminium is strong enough to hold a large pane of glass in a very slim frame. Inside the house that means a door which reads as glass rather than as a door, so a room stays bright even once it is divided.
It is the usual answer to a problem people create for themselves with open plan living. A big open kitchen-diner is wonderful until someone wants the television on while another person is cooking. Glazed internal doors give you the option to close it off and still see through.
The other common use is a hallway. A glazed internal screen keeps heat where you want it without turning the hall into a dark corridor.
Which one suits depends on the opening, how the room is used, and whether you want it open or closed most of the time. That is what the survey is for.
The straightforward option. A pair of glazed doors between two rooms, hinged so they sit flat against the wall when open.
Where there is no room for a door to swing. Slides along the opening instead, which suits narrow hallways and smaller rooms.
Folds back on itself to open up almost the whole width. Best where you want the two rooms to feel like one most of the time and separate occasionally.
No door at all — a glazed partition that defines a space while keeping the light and the sightlines. Often paired with a single door alongside.
Aluminium is powder coated, so the frame colour is genuinely up to you rather than limited to a short list. Most people choose either a black or anthracite frame for the industrial look, or match the internal doors to the external windows and doors so the house reads as one thing.
Glass is a choice too. Clear if the point is light and sightlines, obscured or reeded if the point is separation without a solid wall.
If you are already replacing external windows or doors, choosing internal frames at the same time means the colours match exactly and it is one visit rather than two.
Most of the aluminium internal doors we fit go into houses that have just been extended. The extension creates one large space, and then the family discovers they want to be able to shut part of it off.
Because we design, build and glaze extensions ourselves, we can plan the internal openings while the room is still on paper. That is much easier than retrofitting a structural opening once the plaster is on.

Crittall is a brand of steel window and door, and the look people usually mean by ‘Crittall style’ is a slim dark frame with glazing bars. Aluminium achieves a very similar look, generally at lower cost and with easier maintenance. If you have seen a picture you like, bring it to the survey.
Yes. Aluminium is powder coated, so the internal frames can be finished in the same colour as your windows and external doors. It is the main reason people choose aluminium inside rather than timber.
It will reduce it noticeably, which is usually what people want — the television in one room and a conversation in the other. It is not the same as a solid wall, and we would rather tell you that beforehand than have you expect silence.
Usually not for simply replacing an internal door. If the opening is being widened or anything structural is involved, it can do. We will tell you at the survey what your particular job needs.
Openings vary too much to give a useful number here. Aluminium copes with wider openings than timber before the frame needs to get chunky, which is part of the appeal. The survey confirms what your opening will take.
